Local park and community leaders passed a program called "Summer Night Lights," extending nighttime hours at eight parks to keep children and families in the community safe from violence, with overwhelmingly positive results. The Summer Night Lights program doubled in size the following year and became a national model for crime reduction by keeping parks lit longer. So the importance of solar parking lights can be seen.
2. Using Solar Park Lights: Energy Efficiency in Parks and Recreation Areas
Today's solar park lighting technology and fixtures are maximizing park resources and making it easier to adopt energy-efficient, cost-saving strategies. For example, the New York Power Authority will lead efforts to install 500,000 LED street lights in New York by 2025, the largest municipal lighting system in the United States. The program, called Smart Street Lighting in New York, could reduce energy use by 482 gigawatt hours per year and save taxpayers $87 million annually, according to the New York government. Because LEDs use only a fraction of the power of incandescent or sodium vapor bulbs, solar park lights can be powered by solar panels, making them self-contained lighting systems that eliminate the need for wiring, trenching, and other installations associated with grid-tied lights cost.
