Project Profile: Commercial Lithium Battery Storage in Kampala

Location: Kampala, Uganda | Date: Q1 2025
Capacity: 20KW Lithium Battery System | Application: Commercial Energy Storage

A commercial enterprise in Kampala deployed a 20KW lithium battery system to back up critical loads during Uganda's frequent grid brownouts and provide peak shaving for high-demand business hours.

The Anern solution replaced an aging lead-acid bank that had failed after only 18 months of service with a modern lithium-based energy storage platform.

The Contractor's Pain Points: Lead-Acid Fatigue & Space Constraints

The existing lead-acid battery bank required weekly water refills, occupied over 12 square metres of valuable floor space, and delivered only 40% of rated capacity after 18 months.

The contractor needed a drop-in replacement with higher energy density, zero maintenance, and compatibility with the existing inverter infrastructure.

The client also demanded a clear return on investment projection before committing to the lithium upgrade. Anern provided financial analysis using the off-grid solar ROI calculation methodology to justify the transition.

The Anern Solution: High-Density Lithium Battery Upgrade for Commercial Use

Anern engineered a 20KW lithium battery solution using modular LiFePO4 batteries configured for 48V nominal voltage, enabling seamless integration with the client's existing hybrid inverter.

The bank comprised 51.2V wall-mounted lithium solar battery modules for space-efficient vertical stacking, paired with additional 15kWh lithium battery units scaled to meet the commercial load profile.

The complete solution draws from Anern's 24V and 48V lithium battery collection, optimized for commercial energy storage applications requiring high cycle life and compact footprint.

Battery System Configuration & Retrofit Execution

The 20KW system was built around four 51.2V 100Ah LiFePO4 solar battery modules in parallel, delivering 20.48kWh of usable capacity with 90% depth of discharge.

The retrofit took less than 8 hours. The contractor removed the spent lead-acid units, mounted the wall-hanging lithium batteries using pre-drilled brackets, and connected them to existing bus bars.

BMS integration was plug-and-play, with CAN communication recognized by the inverter on first boot without any wiring or configuration changes.

Key B2B Benefits & Project Impact

  • 10x Cycle Life vs. Lead-Acid: LiFePO4 chemistry delivers 6,000+ cycles at 90% DoD compared to 500-800 cycles for the previous lead-acid bank
  • 80% Floor Space Recovery: Wall-mounted lithium modules collapsed 12 sqm of battery footprint into just 1.5 sqm of wall area, freeing prime commercial real estate
  • Zero-Maintenance Operations: Eliminated weekly water refills, terminal cleaning, and equalization charges — saving approximately $180/month in labour
  • Direct Retrofit Compatibility: Anern's 48V lithium platform connected directly to the existing inverter without any wiring changes
